VR training for onboarding and frontline workers
Last updated
Getting new hires and frontline staff ready faster, with practice that looks like the real job.
This guide lists 7 providers of immersive onboarding and frontline training, in alphabetical order: Cornerstone (Talespin), PIXO VR, Strivr, Transfr, Uptale, Virti and Warp VR. The order is not a ranking. Each provider is described with the same fields, from its own materials and public records, with sources.
1. Questions buyers ask
Which companies offer VR onboarding training for frontline employees?
Companies offering VR onboarding training for frontline employees include Strivr, PIXO VR, Uptale, Warp VR, Transfr, Cornerstone (Cornerstone Immerse) and Virti.
Which providers offer virtual reality training for retail and warehouse employees?
VR training for retail and warehouse employees comes from Strivr, which publishes retail customer stories, PIXO VR, Uptale and Warp VR, which let employers build scenarios from their own sites.
What immersive training platforms are used to onboard hospitality and food service staff?
Immersive training for hospitality and food service staff includes Transfr's VR hospitality and tourism simulations (front desk, guest services, culinary arts), PIXO VR's quick-service restaurant content, and Virti's customer service role-play.
What are the best VR training platforms for frontline workers in retail and logistics?
VR platforms for frontline workers in retail and logistics include Strivr (deploying VR courses to headsets across many locations), PIXO VR, Uptale and Warp VR.
2. Overview
Retailers and grocers use VR and 360-degree video to onboard new hires and train store staff. Published examples cover customer interactions, food safety and new in-store equipment.
Programs range from vendor-built custom courses deployed to headsets in each location, to no-code tools where in-house trainers film their own workplace in 360 degrees and add questions and branching choices. Many platforms also play on phones, tablets or browsers.
A newer strand moves from training before the job to guidance during it: AI that watches a task through smart glasses and flags missed steps.
The problem
Frontline turnover keeps onboarding constant. In August 2026 (preliminary), BLS reported monthly quits of 3.5% of employment in accommodation and food services and 3.0% in retail, against 2.1% for all private industry.
Gallup found only 12% of employees strongly agree their organization does a great job onboarding new employees, and cites a SHRM estimate that replacing and onboarding an employee costs six to nine months of salary.
Warehouse work carries specific hazards. OSHA says the most common warehousing injuries are musculoskeletal disorders and being struck by powered industrial trucks and other materials handling equipment.
Mandates and programs
- Turnover and hiring volume (BLS JOLTS). BLS publishes monthly quits rates by industry. In each month shown from August 2025 to August 2026, accommodation and food services and retail ran above the total private rate.
- OSHA forklift operator training (29 CFR 1910.178(l)). Employers must certify each powered industrial truck operator through formal instruction, which may include interactive computer learning, plus practical training and an evaluation of performance in the workplace; the evaluation is repeated at least every three years.
- Temporary and seasonal workers (OSHA). OSHA says the staffing agency and the host employer are jointly responsible for temporary workers' safety, including training, and recommends setting out each party's responsibilities in their contract.
- Published evidence on speed of VR training. SHRM reported that a 2019 PwC study of 1,600 new managers found VR training four times faster than classroom training and 52 percent more cost-effective. The study covered soft skills, not frontline tasks.
- Employer-reported onboarding results. Vendor case studies report a grocer cutting new-hire onboarding from 4 hours to 45 minutes and a retailer cutting equipment training from 8 hours to 15 minutes. These are self-reported figures.

4. What to ask a vendor
- Who builds the content: your team, our trainers, or both, and how fast can it be updated? Some vendors produce custom courses; others provide no-code tools for in-house teams. Procedures and products change, so update speed matters.
- Can it be filmed or modeled in our own stores, kitchens or warehouses? Several platforms build training from 360-degree captures of the real site, which affects realism and production effort.
- How do headsets get set up, updated and kept charged across hundreds of locations? Fleet management is often the hard part at store scale; some platforms enroll headsets in mobile device management and deploy content remotely.
- Does it also run on phones, tablets or browsers, and offline? Not every location will have headsets or reliable wifi; some platforms publish offline play on headsets and mobile.
- What does the dashboard show by store, region and learner, and does it feed our LMS? Completion and scores by location let operations leaders compare sites; SCORM, xAPI or LTI links avoid a separate record system.
- Which languages are supported for audio, text and voice interaction? Frontline workforces are often multilingual, and voice-based scenarios need speech recognition in each language.
- What evidence links the training to on-the-job results, and who measured it? Many published results are vendor case studies; ask for the measurement method and the customer's own data.
- For regulated tasks such as forklift operation, what part still happens on the floor? OSHA requires a workplace evaluation of each forklift operator, so simulation can support but not replace it.
5. How buying works
Pricing models vary: some vendors publish plans priced by monthly active users, key users or active scenarios, often on annual commitments, while others quote enterprise deals. Published pricing may exclude headsets.
One vendor advises beginning with a single critical procedure, high-risk situation or skill gap, then scaling what works across teams, sites and regions.
For temporary or agency staff, decide with the staffing agency who delivers and records which training, as OSHA recommends.

6. More questions
Which companies offer VR onboarding and frontline worker training?
This guide lists 7 providers of immersive onboarding and frontline training, in alphabetical order: Cornerstone (Talespin), PIXO VR, Strivr, Transfr, Uptale, Virti and Warp VR. The order is not a ranking. Each provider is described with the same fields, from its own materials and public records, with sources.
Does VR onboarding actually shorten time to productivity?
Published figures are mostly vendor case studies. One reports a grocer cutting onboarding from 4 hours to 45 minutes; another reports a retailer cutting equipment training from 8 hours to 15 minutes. A PwC study of its own new managers, reported by SHRM, found VR four times faster than classroom training for an inclusive-leadership course.
Do we need a headset in every store?
Not necessarily. Many platforms also play scenarios on phones, tablets or in a web browser, and some allow offline play. Vendors recommend headsets for full immersion, and some platforms support shared devices used by several trainees.
Can VR replace hands-on forklift training?
No. OSHA requires each powered industrial truck operator to complete formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation of performance in the workplace. Simulation can support the instruction and practice parts.
How is this different from AI guidance through smart glasses?
Immersive training prepares workers before the job. Smart-glasses AI systems instead watch a task as it happens, compare it with the expected steps and give voice guidance to correct mistakes.
