2. Overview
This category covers software in which sales reps and service agents practice real conversations, such as cold calls, discovery, objections, complaints and de-escalation, with an AI or avatar counterpart that responds to what they say, followed by scoring and feedback.
Gartner published a Market Overview for B2B Sales AI Role-Play Applications in August 2026, defining them as software that uses AI to simulate realistic business conversations so sales organizations can scale communication training and coaching.
Several products run in a web browser, and some also support tablets or VR headsets. Many add scoring against a rubric, manager dashboards and links to learning management systems and CRMs.
The problem
An NBER study of 5,179 customer support agents found an AI assistant raised issues resolved per hour 14% on average and 34% for novice and low-skilled workers, with minimal impact on experienced workers; the authors suggest it spread the practices of more able workers.
Providers describe a practice gap: managers lack time to run practice calls, colleagues make poor stand-ins for buyers, and new service agents often learn complaint handling on live customers, with quality reviews arriving after the damage.
Mandates and programs
- Gartner Market Overview for B2B Sales AI Role-Play Applications (2026). Gartner published this overview on August 7, 2026, defining sales AI role-play applications as AI software that simulates business conversations to scale communication training, strengthen coaching and speed skill development. This description comes from a vendor press release.
- NBER study of AI in customer support (2023). Researchers studied 5,179 customer support agents given an AI conversational assistant. Issues resolved per hour rose 14% on average and 34% for novice and low-skilled workers; the authors suggest the AI spread the practices of more able workers. It studied live assistance, not practice.
- PwC study of VR soft-skills training (2020). PwC compared classroom, e-learning and VR training in inclusive leadership for more than 1,600 newly promoted managers. VR learners finished faster and reported more confidence acting on what they learned than classroom learners. The study covered leadership skills, not sales.
- Provider-reported service outcomes. Providers publish customer stories, such as Mursion's account of Best Western front-line staff practicing customer care in simulations. These are vendor-published and not independent evaluations.

4. What to ask a vendor
- Can the AI counterpart be built from our own products, objections, scripts and call recordings? Some products convert scripts, recordings and sales material into scenarios; generic library scenarios may not match your buyers or customers.
- How is each session scored, and can we set our own rubric? Products differ between fixed criteria and customer-defined rubrics; ask to see a scored transcript with the evidence behind each score.
- Do you also score real calls, or only practice sessions? Some vendors pair role-play with conversation intelligence that records and scores live calls, which links practice to field performance.
- Is our session data used to train your AI models, and where is it stored? Some providers state that customer data is not used for model training and name where data is hosted; get this in writing.
- Which LMS, CRM and single sign-on standards do you support? Products commonly embed in LMSs via SCORM or LTI and connect to CRMs; confirm the standards your systems use.
- Which languages and accents are supported for practice and scoring? Language coverage varies by product and can differ between speaking and scoring.
- For regulated sales, can scoring check approved claims and flag non-compliant language? At least one life sciences provider scores against approved messaging and flags off-label language with an audit record.
- What evidence links practice scores to sales or service results? Most published outcomes are vendor case studies; ask for the method behind any reported figures.
5. How buying works
Providers commonly offer a free tier, free trial or sample role plays alongside paid plans, with enterprise plans sold through demos.
Enterprise rollouts typically include integration with an LMS through SCORM or LTI, CRM connections and single sign-on; one provider says most teams plan about three weeks of setup before go-live.
ADL describes the LMS in a SCORM environment as the central hub that delivers content and records learner progress; role-play products that embed through SCORM or LTI feed that hub.
For SBIR, GSA schedules, OTAs and other routes in general, see How buying works.
6. More questions
Which companies offer AI role-play and VR training for sales and customer service?
This guide lists 9 providers of AI role-play and immersive sales and customer service training, in alphabetical order: Allego, Hyperbound, Mursion, Quantified, Second Nature, Synthesia, Virti, VirtualSpeech and Yoodli. The order is not a ranking. Each provider is described with the same fields, from its own materials and public records, with sources.
What is AI role-play for sales training?
It is software in which an AI plays a buyer or customer and responds to what the rep says, so reps can rehearse calls such as cold calls, discovery and objection handling and get scored feedback. Gartner calls these sales AI role-play applications.
Can AI role-play be used for customer service and contact-center training?
Yes. Products let agents practice complaints, billing disputes and de-escalation with an AI customer who stays upset until handled well, in short calls that can fit between shifts, before agents face live customers.
Do we need VR headsets?
Usually not. Several products run in a web browser; some also support tablets or VR headsets as options.
Is there evidence that practice-based training works for sales or service?
Independent evidence specific to AI role-play is still limited. A 2023 NBER study found AI help raised novice support agents' productivity most, and a PwC study found VR soft-skills learners more confident than classroom learners. Most sales-specific outcome figures are vendor case studies.
